I recently read an article titled “Volunteer firefighters are getting older. It could be life or death”. The article is regarding the age of volunteer firefighters. It’s scary to see that this is not just a local issue, but nationwide. See the link below to read this article. In our fire company, we currently have a couple 70+ members, several in their mid to late 60s, multiple 50+, and then what I consider “the youth” anyone under 50. This isn’t just my community but yours as well. President John F. Kennedy once famously said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. I implore that same sentiment with you. We need you!! There are many ways to serve your community as a member of our fire company. We need firefighters and will train and equip you at no cost to you. We also need members that are skilled in grant writing, business operations, sales, education and much much more. Don’t think “I couldn’t be of use, my skill set doesn’t match up”. I’m retired now, but my background is aerospace, I’m a commercial pilot and owned an aerospace technical writing company. I went to the academy at 57, so if I can do this….so can you. The article mentioned above is factual and relatable across the country. We are no different in our community, but we could be. All it takes is you. If you’re interested in helping out fill out the online application or contact Chip Miller or myself from the contact us section on this website. I look forward to meeting you soon to discuss how you can help. Thank you, Michael Barney Firefighter |
